Udaipur & Mount Abu

Overview

A short four-day tour of southern Rajasthan, out and back from Udaipur. Two days cover Udaipur, built in 1559 and described by Colonel James Tod as the most romantic spot on the continent of India — the City Palace museum and Crystal Art Gallery, the Jagdish Temple, Sahelion ki Bari, the Bhartiya Lok Kala Mandir folk art museum, the Pratap Memorial and Fateh Sagar Lake. The road then climbs to Mount Abu at 1,200 metres, the only hill station in Rajasthan, for Nakki Lake, the 11th-century Dilwara Jain temples and Sunset Point.

Day-by-day Itinerary

  1. 1

    Udaipur Arrival – City Sightseeing

Arrive at Udaipur railway station, meet our representative and drive to the hotel. Check in and take some rest, then set out on a sightseeing tour of Udaipur. The city was built in 1559 AD by Maharaja Udai Singh and was described as the most romantic spot on the continent of India by Colonel James Tod. Visit the City Palace museum, the Jagdish Temple, Sahelion ki Bari — the queens' resort for their friends — the Bhartiya Lok Kala Mandir folk art museum and the Pratap Memorial. Overnight stay at the hotel in Udaipur.

  2. 2

Udaipur – City Palace & Crystal Gallery

After breakfast, visit the City Palace and its Crystal Art Gallery, then the Jagdish Temple and the Maharana Pratap Memorial, driving past Fateh Sagar Lake and Sahelion ki Bari. Time in the local market in the afternoon. Overnight stay at the hotel in Udaipur.

  3. 3

    Udaipur – Mount Abu (180 km · 3½ hrs)

After breakfast, check out from the hotel and drive to Mount Abu, the only hill station in Rajasthan, at an altitude of 1,200 metres. Arrive and check in at the hotel, then head out to Nakki Lake, which sits virtually in the heart of Mount Abu and is a great draw for visitors. The lake takes its name from the legend that it was scooped out by a god using only his nails, or nakh; while taking a stroll along it, look out for the strange rock formations, and the dilapidated concrete boat-shaped snack bar on the water. Also visit the Dilwara Jain temples, constructed back in the 11th century. In the evening, visit Sunset Point or Nakki Lake for the views. Return to the hotel for an overnight stay.

  4. 4

Mount Abu – Udaipur Drop (180 km · 3½ hrs)

After breakfast, check out from the hotel and drive back to Udaipur, with a drop at the railway station.
